closing::opening::next year at Eighth Street

darling duality-defeating dancers,
no doubt, you've heard the oft-quoted paean to possibility, "When one door closes another door opens." Something--a thought, a relationship, a physical or metaphysical space--ends, crashes, shifts. Whether it was as I wished or left much to be desired, I am the line that carries and continues, the bridge over the dark (or light) waters of uncertainty. I want to have compassion for the one who yearns for ease and comfort even as he knows there is no telling what will come next. Can I carry the yearning for a more engaged existence as a flame that illuminates and warms, rather than one with a sharper, more brittle burning? Hell, maybe the whole thing just wants to turn into glorious and fully exhaled ash that scatters in a good breeze and leaves the hearth scrubbed and ready for the next fires.

But I digress, ever-so-melodramatically.

I say adieu and fare thee well to Jeffrey Bihr Studio, site of Thursday night Soul Motion, The Ocean Refuses No River. Thank you for your settled intimacy, your warm maple floor, the kimonos that witness patiently from the north and south walls.
I say bonjour and let's dance! to Eighth Street Studio (aka Soul Motion Central, aka Berkeley Dance Jam's Warm Room). Thank you for your clean bamboo floor, your white muslin curtains and relaxed, open feel. Beginning January 6, Soul Motion classes will be a full two hours, from 6-8pm every Thursday. Class cards will price sessions very close to the current suggested cost of $10; single entries will be $15.

Excited! You?

dear teachers,

there is solitude, and there is isolation. {i know both}

six and a half years of practice {ongoing, not ending}

perserverance

inkBoat and AXIS dancers

In Limbo, Odd Nerdrom

Over the weekend, I saw ODD, a bracing collaboration between two dance companies (Shinichi Iova-Koga's inkBoat, and Oakland's physically integrated AXIS Dance Company), and cellist/composer Joan Jeanrenaud, inspired by the mythic, figurative work of Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrom. I was struck by the commitment to move, to express, to interact; how the use of internal and external propulsion looked from the outside, and what it "accomplished"; and by the dynamic, vital springboard of stillness. Sheer will to take space; perhaps not ironically, the "disabled," wheelchair-bound AXIS dancers telegraphed a strength and ferocious vitality that held and propelled them. inkBoat's contorting, convulsing motions carried them to the other shore, as it were, without consideration of elegance or conventional notions of prettiness. The routes were indirect and inefficient in the directional dimension only; the fuel was potent, true, unrelenting; the encounters between "abled" and "disabled" dancers were dynamic, brisk, startlingly crucial. And the stillness between gestures--Iova-Koga refers to them as "suspensions, holding points between actions..."--were "... alive, ripe for change and development." The Pause Presence, in the Soul Motion lexicon.
ODD moves to the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice Street, Oakland, CA 94612 for another weekend of performances Friday and Saturday November 12 and 13, with an afternoon show Sunday the 14th at 2:00pm. Tickets here

Freedom in the Framing

dear dance delineators,
can following what comes from the inside create freedom on the outside?
can working with a choice of shapes or qualities offered from the outside enlarge and enliven our inner dance?
what's the difference between moving with a goal in mind and moving within a soft and clear frame of possibility? on our own? with one or more or all?
Jeremy W and Vinn M dropped these inquiries into the personal and collective field this past weekend at Esalen, and what emerged danced with startling brilliance and joy. please join me in two rooms this week, and we will see and be with what happens, big or small, in, out or onward. thank you!

Reflecting Brilliance, in Motion

The moon appears in every season, it is true,
But surely it's best in fall.
In autumn, mountains loom and water runs clear.
A brilliant disk floats across the infinite sky,
And there is no sense of light and darkness,
For everything is permeated with its presence.
--Ryokan, 1758-1831

I see the moon,
the moon sees me.
God bless the moon,
and God bless me.
--traditional nursery rhyme

Faith

The ultimate definition of bravery is not being afraid of who you are.

Belief clings, faith lets go.

Peter Gabriel, The Blood of Eden

Faith is not a commodity we either have or don’t have--
it is an inner quality that unfolds as we learn to trust our own deepest experience...
It is the willingness to take the next step, to see the unknown as an adventure, to launch a journey.

Equinox and Awakening

dear delicious, delirious, darkening dancers,
The Equinox is here. are you striving for balance, equanimity, acceptance? out my studio window, i see that all the plums have dropped from the neighbor's tree, and are rotting in the dust of my didn't-quite-become-a-vegetable-garden-ok-next-year-for-sure. a squirrel, bug-eyed, the tip of his tail wrapped up to fashion a modified mohawk on his furry head, has found one, though, and seems determined to polish it off. oops! he sees me seeing him, and picks his way through the slender branches to presumed safety, dropping the half-eaten plum back into the dust.
Having trouble letting go of summer dreams, love affairs, fruit fallen or otherwise? startled by the hot/cold, blue/grey shifts in the air and sky? aliveness can be embraced as a gift when we open to surprise, change, disappointment with grounded curiosity and an awakened soul.
Please join me for Awake, My Soul, my first daylong workshop in Berkeley, Saturday, October 16, 11am-5pm at Western Sky, 2525 Eighth St, Berkeley 94710. this extended time together will offer many possibilities to move with presence and awareness, startled or not. Cost: $50 if payment received by 10/4; $65 if received thereafter, or at the door, space willing. Registration: PayPal (don't need an account to use this option).

The Simplicity of Silence, and of One Word Only

dear disarming dancers,
Soul Motion 101:
  1. Spiraling into silence
  2. listening
  3. offering the gift of gesture.
thank you, David.
when one writes, he writes for many.

Enough
These few words are enough
If not these words, this breath
If not this breath, this sitting here.
This opening to the life we have
refused again and again
Until now.

It is Not Enough
It is not enough to know.
It is not enough to follow
the inward road conversing in secret.

It is not enough to see straight ahead,
to gaze at the unborn
thinking the silence belongs to you.

It is not enough to hear
even the tiniest edge of rain.

You must go to the place
where everything waits,
there, when you finally rest,
even one word will do,
one word or the palm of your hand
turning outward
in the gesture of gift.

And now we are truly afraid
to find the great silence
asking so little.

One word, one word only.

What If This Were Enough? What Remains?

dear dedicated dance dreamers,
Happy new moon, Eid ul-Fitr (end of the fasting month of Ramadan), Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), and any and all other calls to awakening i may be too asleep to notice. New possibilities abound; an empty slate awaits our particular scrawling dance of chalk-dusted feet or hands or eyes divine, dead or otherwise.
When do these imperatives, however, turn towards the tricky track of "improvement," however well-intentioned? Re: the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur--can i somehow make up for the wasted time/bad behavior/ill-fitted fantasies of the previous 355 days as the drop-dead deadline for the Big Thumb (up or down, squeaking into or slammed out of, finally, the Book of Life for one more year) is a mere ten days away? So much to change! So little time! So much shpilkis!
Howsabout, just this once, we stand where we are, appreciate who we are, feel our roots in the dirt even as the inner and outer winds blast through each moment of this endless journey?
Nothing to do, nowhere to go but down and in, deeper, still.

The Pause::Class Break Until Sept 2

dear daring dance dippers, darling dreamers,
as this series of summer classes in settings new and known comes to a pause, i am grateful to those that provided opportunities for practice, presence and moving through the unknown: dear traveling teacher Zuza, in whose Tuesday and Sunday classes i stood, spoke, saw;  studio owners Jim Beatty (Eighth Street Studio), Jeffrey Bihr (his eponymous studio in Rockridge) and, especially, Michelle and David from Movement Oasis in Santa Rosa, whose welcoming arms have gathered new students and possibilities for their growing community of explorers.
and, mostly, to all the students, new and known, who have shown themselves to themselves and each other, as they were, as they were ready, i trust, with courage, conviction, hesitation, and glorious humanity.
and i Pause, in these last two weeks of August, to take stock, discover what's here as the ripples settle and the space shines.
The Ocean Refuses No River is on Pause until September 2. Move. Pause. Listen. Move. Pause.

Inspiration: A Workshop in Sonoma Co. 9/18

Is it likely, even possible, that what we have to offer to ourselves and each other is sufficient, complete, worthwhile? And that in discovering and sharing these gifts, we encourage these same "others" to do the same? Here's the invitation: come to Inspiration! a Soul Motion Experience, Sat, Sept 18, from 11am-3pm, at Movement Oasis, 1808-B Empire Industrial Court, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. With supple guidance, simple, spacious structures, and evocative music, we'll move with what is. And, we will dance; oh, yes: we will dance.
Cost: $35 (if payment received by 9/3); $45 (if received thereafter or at the door). Please send a check to Michael Zipkin, 447 Beloit Ave, Kensington, CA 94708. Seeking more inspiration? lucid.ocean@gmail.com  510-847-7736  www.lucidmz.blogspot.com

Give Back Your Heart to Itself

Love After Love
The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other's welcome
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you have ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Isn't That Something?

Rumi says,
I like it when the music happens like this:
Something in His eye grabs hold of
  a tambourine in me,
then I turn and lift a violin in someone else,
  and they turn, and this turning continues;
it has reached you now. Isn't that something?

This week, the grand opportunities to experience the web of interdependence continue: Enter The Ocean Refuses No River this Thursday, 6:30-8pm at Jeffrey Bihr Studio. And this Saturday morning, July 10, in the light-washed, bamboo-floored Eighth Street Studio in Berkeley (Friday Dance Jam's Warm Room), 10am-noon, Soul Motion: Spiral Odyssey, a journey through the Soul Motion landscapes. And to round out the weekend in the same room, Sunday I deejay 7:30-11pm at the venerable (and still unpredictable) Barefoot Boogie. Come shine, reflect, radiate!

the cheer-leading universe (god, spirit, earth, ocean, life?)

dear toe-dipping dreamers,
this morning, a warning arrived: "What you don't know can hurt you!" the email went on to warn of "internet intrusions" and "hidden surveillance programs" that seemed to be lurking in some shadowy cyberzone, dangerously just outside my sphere of awareness. wow. talk about restimulating childhood fears of an unsafe world, waiting patiently, unstoppably, for me to drop my guard, anticipating the opportunity to nail my sorry, sweet, naive ass.
this is one way to consider, take in (or repel) the universe and how i am in it.
this week, as i continue to teach Tuesday in my dear teacher Zuza's absence, i am reminded of a deliriously different possibility she suggested some time ago: that the universe (god, spirit, earth, ocean, our life) is actually rooting for us, wishing the best for us, and always offering (however tragically veiled they may be) opportunities for us to express, exalt, shine and shimmer. and that our entering this field of work and play benefits not just our own souls, but is actually what serves all beings in this fractured world.
the chance to be and move and risk together is some of what i am so humbled to offer, this Tuesday in Berkeley, this Thursday in Oakland, this Saturday in Santa Rosa (see Events and Classes, top right of this page). come.

Desire and the End of Desire

dance dears,
i'm back from NCDC Dance Camp, having spent a long, luscious weekend teaching, eating marvelous food, engaging in worded and wordless conversations, gazing amazed at the Milky Way and the waxing moon, and dancing dancing dancing. in classes and, especially, in the nighttime boogies, i fell in love, in lust, aloud and in screaming silence. i felt myself melting, merging; exalting, expanding, extending. and comparing, vigilant and doubting. leaning into my desire, joyfully, mercifully. leaning out, over, down and crashing, sometimes, into that which i imagined would tell me, "i am enough. i am necessary. i am seen, felt, loved."
desire is the fuel to feeling, to creativity, to possibility; the leaning inward, the swirling of the nectar--my nectar-- in the mouth of the belly of my beast. in screaming silence and in "speaking out loud in the clear air." opening to desire, feeling, creation, possibility: first leaning in, then offering out. and being surprised.

Inside/Out: Travel the Soul Motion Landscapes This Saturday Morning in Berkeley

dear dance-casters of light and shadow,
do you give yourself away, when you step into the light?
do you stand in the shadows, because it's where you always stand?
do you find yourself inside the brilliant, shadowy, blinding calm of the solo dance, or do you hear your soul's sweet song most clearly when it's echoed back across the human canyons of one, two, twenty others?
let's explore all (or none) of these questions this Saturday morning, August 14, in the light-washed, bamboo-floored, open/protected Eighth Street Studio in Berkeley (Friday Dance Jam's Warm Room), 10am-noon, during Soul Motion: Spiral Odyssey.
after a luxuriously to-the-point warmup, we'll gather our attention together, and, supported by light, clear words and spacious music, travel through the Soul Motion landscapes of Dance Intimate (solo), Dance Communion (with one other), Dance Community (with more than one other) and Dance Infinite (with the One). spiral in; spiral out. bask in the fields of discovery, dialogue, discourse and devotion! all are welcome!

Dance in the Soft Light of Morning

dear friends known and soon-to-be known,
what if we were to consider each moment lush with the possibility of . . . we-don't-know-what?
what if we could return, again and again, to what's true for us, even as the exterior world spins off-kilter and there seems no ground on which to step that can hold us?
what if we could begin again, each morning, with curiosity and courage, supported by others, known and soon-to-be-known? and all that was asked of us was to be open, pay attention to what has meaning and heart, and to move with that?
come join me on the first Saturdays of June, July and August at the lovingly tended Movement Oasis in Santa Rosa from 10am-noon (see the sidebar, "Classes and Workshops," top right of this page), for Soul Motion Experience, a class inspired by the work of mentors Vinn Marti and Zuza Engler. and by you. and by me. and by all that moves through and around us.

Soul Motion : : Momentum

dear spiral movers,
spring makes visible that which has been within ground and trunk and branch all winter: an undramatic but nevertheless potent deepening and extending of the roots of our matter.

how can we use our Soul Motion practice to encourage our above-ground growth -- the unfolding and flowering that is always available to us? if energy follows attention, can we enliven and extend our dance with soft, clear momentum, and cultivate the courage to share it with the world?

please join me this and every** Thursday as we listen, follow and flow.

The Holotropic Soul in Motion

dear dance adventurers,
What if we lived as if this movement,
this dance partner, this day, this night,
this life, this universe were all on our side:
rooting for us, drawing us unknowingly on
the rocky path towards clarity, aliveness, wholeness?
And that what is called for is to simply
cooperate with this healing intelligence
by moving, on purpose?
